Who I Work With
Identity & Belonging
You were always the smartest kid in class and always being on top, you got validation that way but now you find yourself in the real world and are struggling to find yourself and that validation when you no longer are on top. As a result you felt misunderstood and out of place.
All your life you have felt out of place in the world, like you belong somewhere else but don’t really know where, all you know is everything feels foreign and strange to you. You feel like you can’t connect with people and every interaction feels exhausting.
You felt like you were never one of the cool kids and became an observer instead, so you learned to live through other people’s experiences but now you are feeling tired of not really living to your fullest potential and are ready to get back into your body and live your own life.
Burnout & Motivation
You are trying to balance different things in your life, school, work, social life, family life but despite giving it your all feel like you are not doing enough. You find it hard to be gentle with yourself and don’t know how to be free from these high and unrealistic expectations for yourself.
You are questioning your faith , or maybe you have lost it and feel like now there is a void inside inside and you are struggling to navigate life.
You are no longer a young adult and find that the things that excited you or brought you joy, no longer do so. You are struggling to find new meaning or joy in your everyday life. Life has become dull and has lost its excitement. You feel like something is missing.
Heartbreak & Relationships
You just went through another bad breakup, you feel broken and feel like you can’t be in a good relationship, you feel like you are attracting the same people in relationships and don’t know how to break this pattern.
Your partner and others in your life are frustrated because they say you don’t show enough empathy and find it hard to connect with them. You want to learn how to better communicate and connect with your loved ones.

Therapy Approach
What Kind of Therapy Do I Provide?
I have extensive training in psychoanalytic therapy which is my main modality. This approach chose me through my own healing journey and personal experiences. I truly believe in its great potential. It doesn’t predetermine where the healing journey will go, or what it needs to look like. It aims to reach deeper parts of the human experience and uses its lenses to expand awareness to ways in which the past manifests itself in the present. To be attuned to the nonverbal which after all is the loudest communicator. It’s about slowing down and letting the barriers that stand in the way of experiencing ourselves more fully dissolve. It’s a way of honoring ourselves and our experiences by not being afraid of going into the dark, into the irrational, and into the beautiful chaos that is our psychic essence. The journey will not always be linear or clear and clean-cut but that just means that we are on the right journey and are doing the work. That is only the beginning.
I like to think of this as opening our proverbial can of worms in a safe and healing environment so that we meet, acknowledge, and eventually release these creatures.
Part of my approach is establishing a relationship with you where you feel trust and comfort in expressing your emotions and analyzing your previous experiences with your childhood or current relationships (attachment-based therapy) .
Sometimes, the mental health issues you are facing are rooted in larger human conditions such as loneliness, free-will, and searches for meaning, in which case existential therapy could provide you the guidance you seek.
While PAT is my main modality, I also can integrate other methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which include exercises for addressing mental heath issues.
Different kinds of therapy work for different kinds of people, so I encourage you to explore different therapist to find the one that works for you.
I offer a complementary 25-minute televisit consultation so that you can make the best decision for your mental wellbeing.
My Philosophy
Being in therapy is like a journey you take with the therapist as a guide as both travel through the landscapes of the psyche. I understand that this is a very intimate experience and allowing someone to walk with you along this journey takes time as you find the right person to walk with and build trust. I believe it is important to develop a narrative about our lives and our experiences that makes sense to us and brings us meaning. Therapy can provide that space and relationship.
Growing up we are not really taught how to communicate with others, how to express our needs, wants, and desires and as adults we often struggle with this. Therapy is that space in time once a week where you will stop and reflect upon your psychic experience, the time to get to know yourself a little bit better, to get to know more about the precious landscape that is your psyche including those dark parts that might be so difficult to see.
Therapy requires the courage to look inside yourself and to make those changes to live a more authentic and joyous life. I believe all humans have the inner drive to relate and to create and while it is not the easiest of journeys it is certainly one worth taking.
I like to think of psychotherapy as an intense encounter where creativity occurs. Creativity, meaning the creation of something new, a new meaning, a new narrative about life and the self. This experience is unique to the therapeutic encounter as the therapist commits to this process of intense knowing of the client. I believe that the potential of this creation is limitless and can only be known by engaging fully with intensity.
About Me
Jose Buenrostro, MFT
I am a psychotherapist with a private clinical practice licensed in both Texas and California (LMFT) with 6 years of experience. I work primarily with adults in individual therapy. I hold a Masters of Science in Clinical Psychology from San Francisco State University. In 2019, I completed a two-year fellowship at the Access Institute for Psychological Services.
I am originally from Mexico and emigrated to the US as a child, lived in SF Bay area for two decades, and now call Dallas-Fort Worth home. I am a dog dad to a two-year-old English Cocker Spaniel named Miso, married to my partner of four years, and spend my free time adventuring to trending sushi spots, scoping out neighborhood dog parks, and simply living in the moment at my local coffeeshop in the Texas heat.
Miso
Miso is an unofficial therapy dog as he is present during most of my sessions providing inspiration and unconditional love. He is joyous, loving and happy to be alive. He is an inspiration as he lives in the moment and makes the most out of every new encounter and experience.
